MTV Video Music Awards: 10 Things Seen and Heard
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards certainly had its share of gawk-worthy moments, from Lady Gaga's foul-mouthed alter-ego to the biggest surprise of the night: Beyonce's pregnancy announcement. The Hollywood Reporter had every angle covered, from the carpet to the star-heavy orchestra seats. Here, 10 things seen and heard at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater on music's big night.our editor recommendsMTV Video Music Awards: Rebecca Black Dishes on Katy Perry (Video)MTV Video Music Awards: Lady Gaga Doesn't Break From Foul-Mouthed Drag King Act (Video)MTV Video Music Awards: Nicki Minaj Talks Her Upcoming Album (Video)MTV VMAs: Best and Worst Moments Selena Gomez questions Justin Bieber ... literally.During an early rehearsal, Justin Bieber played stand-in for girlfriend-turned-MTV correspondent Selena Gomez (he pretended to be Gomez's next interview, Kim Kardashian). Later, when it was time for Gomez to sit down with Bieber for a Q&A, her first question seemed almost accusatory: "Why did you bring him?" she asked of Bieber's pet snake. And Bieber's snake is no babe magnet. Bieber's red carpet date, his pet snake Johnson, scared the bejesus out of Demi Lovato, who screamed when Bieber approached her inside the theater. Dave Grohl experiences ageism on the carpet. Walking the carpet alongside teen stars like Victoria Justice and Bieber might give a more seasoned rocker a bit of a complex. But not Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. "This VMAs I think is the first time I haven't felt like Father Time on the red carpet," he told THR. "I mean, I heard Tony Bennett is here and I was kind of psyched because that means I'm not the oldest one." Jersey Shore's Pauly D comes face-to-face with his idol. Getting to meet Busta Rhymes on the carpet (and make plans to "hook up after") was a dream come true for Jersey Shore's resident DJ. "It was so cool," Pauly D told THR. "I played his music my whole life." He hasn't soured on red carpets, either. "I get to meet all these guys, I love this stuff." Lady Gaga grabs Snooki's boob. Or was that Jo Calderone who placed his filthy paw on Snooki's left lemon? After all, Gaga stayed in character all night -- in the audience, backstage, across the street in the press room, rubbing her face and fussing with her hair often. Even when talking to Tony Bennett and Brian May, she never broke character, according to multiple witnesses. Katy Perry and Russell Brand PDA proudly. It was a big night for Katy Perry, who won two moonmen including Video of the Year, and no one was more elated than her husband Russell Brand. Viewers saw Brand get emotional on camera, and when he greeted Perry offstage, it was all hugs and kisses and big heartfelt congratulations. As one backstage observer described it, "they were more affectionate than we've ever seen. It was so cute." Beyonce and Gaga hug it out. The pair of pop superstars embraced for a solid minute while standing in the audience surrounded by a wall of bodyguards. Presumably, congratulations were in order, but the two do go back in the music video world. They collaborated on Gaga's "Telephone" from 2009's The Fame Monster. Britney Spears takes it all in. The most subdued star of the night award goes to... Britney Spears, who stayed quietly seated for most of the show, flanked by longtime manager Larry Rudolph on one side and boyfriend Jason Trawick on the other. Jersey Shorecast attend sans Situation; Snooki grabs the spotlight. The big question on Jersey Shore fans' minds (and there were plenty judging by the ear-shattering shrieks for Pauly D on the carpet): where was The Situation? His absence seemed suspect to the press corps situated in a complex at the nearby Marriott. Equally perplexing: why Snooki was the only Shore star to pose solo for photographers (while the rest of the crew waited awkwardly to the side). Jay Z and Kanye West get downright giddy. Beyonce's baby news coupled with a Watch the Throne surprise appearance meant the two rappers were in a really good mood all night. It probably didn't hurt that Taylor Swift was safely tucked away across the street at Staples Center, where she was joined by Nicki Minaj for another surprise: a duet of "Super Bass." Ough Gervais States NBC Wants Him To Host The Globes
La, Calif. -- Could Ough Gervais be coming back to host the Golden Globes? The British actor and comedian who shocked the star-studded audience captured with jokes about Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Junior., and Julia Roberts and Johnny Depps The Tourist recommended again that NBC wants him to return for that award show once the Globes return in 2012. NBC have offered it they believe they are able to persuade the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, he stated in the MediaGuardian Edinburgh Worldwide TV Festival on Friday, per The Hollywood Reporter. However I dont think they'll go for this. I really like NBC and that i love the truth that they've tied to me through everything, he added. What am I returning as? he stated, based on Britains The Protector newspaper. Gervais also stated hed been contacted concerning the Academy awards hosting job. They stated to my agent would he enjoy being on our list, he recounted, per The Protector. I couldnt perform the Academy awards. Its a thankless job for a comedian. Tom Hardy On Dark Knight Rises Leaked Photos & The Pain Of Filming Warrior
By Jolie LashLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- In recent weeks, dozens of photographs from the Pittsburgh set of The Dark Knight Rises have cropped up on the internet, but Tom Hardy, who plays Batman villain Bane in the project, isnt worried the early un-authorized looks at the project will hurt director Christopher Nolans vision. No, I dont think so, Tom told Access Hollywood on Saturday as he promoted his newest box office feature, the Mixed Marital Arts-themed Warrior, in Beverly Hills. I think theres a certain inevitability if youre going to shoot in the middle of the street that its very hard to block off the entire street from people taking photographs, Tom continued. But that doesnt mean its going to be anything like the film. You have people taking photographs from a distance of whats going on on the ground. It bears very little resemblance to whats going on. Toms Warrior co-star, Joel Edgerton, who is getting ready for his own highly anticipated project, The Great Gatsby, suggested the Internet postings only add to the excitement. It all becomes enticing, doesnt it, I think, for everybody? Tom chimed in. The Internet helps, the fans help the film anyway, it all becomes enticing. You just get little grabs, and people are like, I wanna know more! One thing plenty of movie fans want to know more about presently is the physiques Tom and Joel achieved for their brothers-at-odds drama Warrior, which in the films poster shows both men ripped like superheroes. If Joel had listened to the advice of one physician, however, he wouldnt have signed on for the role of Brendan Conlon, a physics teacher, father to two daughters and a husband to Jennifer Morrisons Tess Conlon, who turns to life in the brutal MMA ring in hopes of saving his family from total financial ruin. I have a couple of neck issues, like most people on the planet, Joel, who practiced martial arts as a youngster in his native Australia, told Access. I had this doctor say to me, I suggest that you do not do this movie. Really? a surprised Tom chimed in. Yeah Obviously I did it He had fears for my neck. But that was part of the excitement for signing up for something like that, Joel continued. Its a real challenge, because I had the sort of stupid idea that I was too old to do something that athletic any more Martial arts for me is all gone, which is absolutely stupid. Tom, who plays the returned-from-Iraq Tommy Conlon in the film, Brendans younger brother battling his own demons, said the help of trainers got him in shape, but while it was a painful project to film, he couldnt say no to the challenge of the role. It just hurts, doesnt it? Im not gonna lie, the Brit said with a laugh of shooting the intense fight scenes. Its MMA. It hurts. You either get better at it or you dont and you dont continue it. Warrior hits theaters on September 9. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer Still Hoping for The Dark Tower
· Universal may have knocked down Ron Howard’s planned adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer apparently told Page Six that the men are still looking for outside financing for the ambitious project, which would then be distributed through a major studio. Great! Just don’t expect this to come together anytime soon. “[T]he soonest we could do it would be June next year,” Grazer said. Mark that on your calendar in pencil, then stick around for more Buzz Break. [via NYP] · The Help writer and director Tate Taylor is in talks to take on another literary adaptation, Peace Like a River. The film would follow an 11-year-old boy and his “eccentric” family in Minnesota. [THR] · Now that Jennifer Lopez has gotten her movie career back on track, she’s free to return to American Idol. She’ll judge next season with Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, while Ryan Seacrest will return as host. [TVLine] · Vulture reports Jonah Hill may co-star in Neighborhood Watch opposite Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, but that he “wants to get paid considerably more than his usual quote” because the trailer for Moneyball has tested better than any in the history of Columbia Pictures. OK, then. [Vulture] · Here are four reasons why The Carrie Diaries — the Sex and the City prequel — works better as a television series than a feature film. [BuzzSugar]

'Apes' grosses $1.25 million at midnight
Fox's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' earned $1.25 million in midnight grosses Thursday. If midnight grosses are any indication, then it would seem ''Rise of the Planet of the Apes,'' with $1.254 million, is on track to at least match the opening perf of ''Cowboys and Aliens.''Last weekend, ''Cowboys'' opened with $36.4 million after kickstarting the frame with $800,000 in late-night earnings.Nothing's guaranteed for 20th Century Fox's ''Apes'' this weekend, but according to sources, the film is playing similarly to ''Cowboys'' in early Friday numbers. If ''Apes'' can keep momentum going -- that is, close to how ''Cowboys'' finished -- then that would put the Fox pick closer to where most rival studios had predicted ''Apes'' would land. Fox said on Thursday it expected the film to bow in the high-$20 million to low-$30 million range.''Apes'' played at a total 1,124 midnight runs. Pic expands today to a total domestic count of 3,648 locations.

Harry Shum Junior. Hopes To Sing In Glee Season 3
NEW You are able to, N.Y. -- Harry Shum Junior.s character on Glee might be an associate from the glee club but that does not mean hes become the opportunity to sing. There is a running joke on the program that his character, Mike Chang, is tone-hard of hearing and the dancing ability makes him valuable towards the New Directions show choir. In tangible existence, Shum states hes been taking vocal training and hopes to obtain a shot at singing on the program. Im not the very best singer but Im certainly not the worst. Im somewhere between but Ill allow the audience gauge how good that's and hopefully the show enables me to sing a genuine song, states Shum. The smoothness of Mike Chang has been around since season one with hardly any dialogue. Shum describes him as beginning off like a background character who does dance making facial expressions. He'd be at liberty when the camera cut to him periodically for any reaction shot. Hes gradually become more screen some time and was lately upgraded from recurring to some regular cast member. For his Glee co-stars, Shum states hes unsure if anybody will leave the series in the finish from the third season. (There has been conflicting reviews about a few of the stars departing the show as their figures graduate from senior high school.) I believe well discover very, soon however i think the primary focus, rather than what is happening on season four, ought to be season three, states Shum. Glee returns Sept. 21 on Fox. Meanwhile, fans can catch Glee: The three dimensional Concert Movie, in theaters beginning August. 12. Copyright 2011 by Connected Press. NBC Boss: SVU's Hargitay Will Remain in "Every Episode," Voice Returns Post-Super Bowl
Mariska Hargitay, Carson Daly Mariska Hargitay will be lightening her workload during the next season of Law & Order: SVU, but NBC boss Robert Greenblatt says viewers won't be able to tell. "You will not notice anything," Greenblatt said Monday, while speaking to reporters during NBC's fall TV preview session. He added that while the actress, who recently adopted a child, will be "lightening her load in terms of shooting days," her alter ego Olivia Benson won't be any less of a presence on-screen. (Benson will be promoted to a supervisor position in the 13th season, a shift that prompted headlines earlier this year suggesting Hargitay would be returning in only a reduced capacity.) "I don't think anything is going to change on screen," Greenblatt said, adding that his goal is to have Hargitay remain on the show well beyond next season. "She's going to be in every episode." (At the same time, Christopher Meloni, who played Benson's partner Elliot Stabler, has left the series and new detectives have been brought in. They'll be played by Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino.) Greenblatt also announced that the second season of singing competition The Voice - "a very welcome and unexpected hit" for the network - has landed TV's most coveted launch pad. It will return after the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. New series Smash, a musical starring Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee, will premiere at 10/9c on Feb. 6, following the second episode of The Voice. Elsewhere in news of NBC's more successful franchises, Greenblatt said he'd just attended a table reading for the new Steve Carell-less season of The Office and left confident that James Spader, who will play a new head of Dunder-Mifflin, could carry the banner, albeit a different one. "He the perfect fit in the mix... I think he is completely different than Steve. He's got his own iconoclastic acting style," Greenblatt said. "It will be a slight adjustment for the rest of the cast as things move around," but the transition has created a "refocused" writers room. In terms of ratings expectations, Greenblatt said he'd be "thrilled" if the show maintained its current levels of viewership. Looking forward at NBC, Greenblatt outlined what's coming up, his hopes for a piece of the animation game and why he's not worried about The Playboy Club: Sean Hayes, Michael Buble, Dick Wolf and Will Ferrell, have projects in the pipeline. Hayes is working on a comedy pilot in which he'll star. "It's early days, but we're honing in on an idea," Greenblatt said. "Sean is a good friend and I think it's time he came back" in front of the camera. (Hayes has kept busy as a producer on NBC's upcoming Grimm and TV Land's Hot in Cleveland.) Pop star Michael Buble, meanwhile, will star in a holiday special produced by Saturday Night Live maestro Lorne Michaels. Wolf is developing a firefighter drama for the network, and Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Prods. (HBO's Eastbound and Down) have signed a deal to develop comedies. NBC wants its own hit animated series. In the hopes of getting just that, the network and Universal Media Studios have signed Office creator Greg Daniels - whom Greenblatt referred to as "one of the founding fathers of our Thursday night comedy lineup" - to a development and production deal calling for him to develop shows in a variety of genres, but specifically in animation. Before The Office, Daniels created and executive produced Fox's King of the Hill. Playboy problems? Last month, NBC's Salt Lake City affiliate KSL-TV said it would not carry NBC's upcoming drama The Playboy Club. The show has since laded a new home on KMYU, but the Parents Television Council is still urging other affiliates to drop the show. Greenblatt said he isn't worried. "Every other affiliate will be airing the show," he said, saying KSL-TV's decision didn't surprise him. "They don't program Saturday Night Live" either. And as far as the comparisons to Mad Men, Greenblatt said the confusing the two period dramas is unlikely. Playboy Club is "much more of an energized soap opera... I don't think it will feel like Mad Men when you ultimately see it," he said. "It's a fun soap with a mob element, a crime element..." What's next for NBC? Check out Prime Suspect and Smash. Greenblatt pointed to the upcoming remake of Prime Suspect, starring Maria Bello as a tough detective trying to thrive in the boys of club of the police department, as a good example of the kinds of shows he's looking to put on NBC. (Greenblatt spent the past several years running programming for cable network Showtime.) "It's a big genre show, but it feels fresh," he said, explaining that it's a cop drama driven by a strong "iconoclastic" female lead in Bello's character. Another example is Smash, a mid-season drama from executive producer Steven Spielberg set against the mounting of a new Broadway show. It will feature original music (unlike the popular Top 40 fare found in Glee). "Smash may be the most adventurous show we do, and it may be the most narrow show we do," he said. NBC is grateful for The Voice and The Sing-Off and The Biggest Loser, but... The network wants more scripted hits. While tipping his hat to America's Got Talent, which is in the middle of its strongest season ever, and The Voice, Greenblatt said "there's no negative to the reality stuff," but that he would also like to "rebalance" the schedule with "scripted shows that become long lasting hits. We're focused on that pretty extensively."
