R.I.P. Jeffrey Hodes

Comedy writer Jeffrey Hodes has died suddenly from cancer treatment-related complications. He was in his 40s. Hodes had cancer but was in remission and was getting ready for a bone marrow transplant. He went in yesterday for a blood transfusion in preparation for the transplant when he started having breathing problems. An MRI revealed blood in his brain and, after a day in intensive care, he was taken off life support this afternoon. For his entire career, Hodes worked with Nastaran Dibai who was his wife and writing partner. Hodes is survived by Dibai and their young daughter. Hodes and Dibai worked together on such comedy series as According to Jim, 3rd Rock From the Sun and The Nanny and the Kelly Ripa-starring Hope & Faith. Last year, Hodes and Dibai developed a comedy project for ABC with Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos. “Jeffrey Hodes was a brilliant comedy writer, an amazing showrunner and a wonderful husband and father,” Ripa said. “I considered myself one of the luckiest people alive to call him a true friend. I will miss him terribly.” The Ripa/Consuelos project was executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, who collaborated with Hodes and Dibai on several projects, including the ABC pilot Funny in Farsi, which the writing duo created. He was an fantastic writer and an even better husband and father.” Kaplan said. “The world has lost a truly talented man.” TV producer Mindy Schultheis was also among Hodes’ close friends. (Hodes and Dibai wrote for the Lifetime comedy Rita Rocks, which Schultheis produced) “I’m heartbroken,” Schultheis said. “I honestly don’t even have the words to express how much he will be missed. He had a passion for life, his family and his work that permeated all he did. He was not only an incredibly talented writer but he was a truly wonderful guy.” Up until Hodes’ death, he and Dibai were serving as co-executive producers on TV Land’s recently renewed series Happily Divorced, reuniting with The Nanny star/co-creator Fran Drescher. Fall TV Preview: Ringer

Sarah Michelle Geller and Ioan Gruffudd Getting come old within the pre-VCR/DVD/Digital recording device era, I've got a soft place for that kind of glossy B-movie melodramas that was previously a standard feature of local channels. Movies like Dead Ringer, a '60s potboiler starring Bette Davis like a lady who gets control her identical twin's identity. Any resemblance towards the CW's Ringer might not be intentional, however it predisposes me in the future along for that convoluted ride. (Evaluations towards the twin-changing shenanigans at ABC Family's The Laying Game will also be inevitable, but this can be a a lot more clearly defined mystery thriller, and it is targeted in a a little more mature and complicated audience. It had been produced for CBS, surprisingly.) Want more fall TV news? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now! The large news in Ringer may be the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar, immortalized as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to everything about the weblet. Within this enjoyable dual role, she reaches run the lady-in-peril gamut from scrappy waif to glamorous ice full, playing estranged twins who reunite red carpet years apart. It's obvious from the beginning that we are meant to root for Bridget, a recuperating addict and former exotic dancer who flees Wyoming using the FBI (and agent Nestor Carbonell) on her behalf tail, because the imperiled only witness to some murder. Her sister, Siobhan, married well and lives in metropolitan Manhattan luxury, though her tightly wound persona signals there's trouble in paradise. We obtain a pleasant wry Buffy vibe within the moment when Bridget inspections out Siobhan's digs and remarks, "It appears much like the house - except not whatsoever." But soon, this house of mirrors (a recurring symbolic motif of duality) turns into a topsy-turvy funhouse of risky secrets when Siobhan all of a sudden vanishes - mid-boat ride, a scene notable because of its Hitchcockian artificiality - and Bridget, presuming she's dead, steps into her sister's pumps. The masquerade is partially possible because Siobhan never told anybody she'd a sister: not her aloof husband (Ioan Gruffudd), not her exacerbated stepdaughter, not her insistent and hiding admirer (Kristoffer Polaha). The first fun of Ringer originates from watching Bridget walk on designer eggshells, trying to puzzle out this mystery of her new identity. "Siobhan, what have you do?" Bridget laments (right into a mirror, obviously) after unraveling another secret about why her sister's existence seems to become this type of miserable mess. Also potentially harmful. The very first episode opens and shuts about the cliffhanger of Bridget-as-Siobhan being stalked by an unseen menace, but which sister may be the actual target? As lengthy as Ringer keeps us asking them questions such as this, and Gellar keeps us involved in the luxurious and twisted sister act, we are more than pleased to become subjected to the romantic-suspense wringer. Ringer airs Tuesdays, 9/8c, about the CW Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

Nevertheless it's also intelligent, filled with figures that may not do smart things nonetheless they do them honestly. And consists of an incredibly strong volume of humor. First Oscar Screener Mailed to SAG Voters Over Labor Day Weekend

In case the arrival of the Venice, Telluride, and Toronto film festivals hadn't already made it clear that the awards season is officially underway, I learned this morning that members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and members of the Screen Actors Guild nominating committee received their first awards screener over the holiday weekend: Jim Kohlberg's The Music Never Stopped, a film that was released theatrically in March and features a critically-acclaimed lead performance from noted character actor J.K. Simmons (Juno) that Roadside Attractions, in partnership with the public relations firm PMK*BNC, has decided to push for a best actor nomination. In the moving film -- which is based on the renowned Oliver Sacks short story "The Last Hippie," and which earned a 65 percent favorable rating on RottenTomatoes.com -- Simmons plays Henry Sawyer, a man struggling to re-connect with his long-estranged son after the younger man develops a brain tumor that prevents him from forming new memories, and who finds that listening to his son's favorite music (namely, that of The Grateful Dead), which had long ago come between them, now provides him with the best hope of healing their relationship. FULL DISCLOSURE: Kohlberg is a distant relative of mine, although I haven't yet had the opportunity to meet or speak with him. I hope to rectify that in the near future. Oscars 2012
